I'm still amazed that good lighter like Kingsford burns cleanly away and leaves no odor or flavor. Tried it when I couldn't find my chimney. Don't buy the cheap stuff though. Dollar store charcoal lighter smells like the north end of a southbound Peterbuilt

I've never had a problem using Kingsford - charcoal and lighter fluid in my PBC - no off taste when following the instructions. I do use a chimney for my 500X and the Performer has its own propane based lighter. One of my brothers claims that he can taste
any briquette in a cook. He'll be out here this summer and we'll do a blind test to see about his "taster"...
