Shortly after 9/11/01 you couldn't buy a flag anywhere because they were all sold out. But, you could borrow one. A friend and I were driving from Little Rock to Atlanta in a car Hertz gave us at no charge to return there. The airlines were grounded. We had a Ray Charles' CD in the player and it had just finished his gorgeous version of "America" as we came over the top of a hill and under a bridge where a grizzled old gentleman was avidly waving a big American flag he'd likely borrowed from a school or his church. People were waving and horns were honking and headlights flashing. Do you remember those days? God, bless America.
