Daddy'll fix it
« Reply #-1 on: June 22, 2014, 08:35:42 AM »
How many times did we hear when we were young, "Daddy'll be home soon and he'll fix it."?

It always seemed that our Daddy could always fix anything that was wrong in our lives.  Too bad not as many kids have Daddies as most of us did who could "fix it when he comes home.''

Two parents: Daddy could fix it.  Momma could kiss it and make it all better.  With that---life was good.

Dee I grew up working on a GTO with my dad. Helped build a house, patio cover, or whatever else needed to be done with my uncles so those mechanical skills were passed on to me. My son will benefit from that when he gets older as he does projects with me.

Then there are younger people who have been hired by my company who have never really used more than a basic screwdriver. You say grab your crescent wrench and they bring back needle nose pliers. :o

Seems mechanical skills are becoming more and more of a lost art...

I also remember my Mother making me go get my own switch (sort of like having the condemned tie his own hangman's noose) and I'd plead with her not to take the leaves off of it.  Of course,  she did strip that sucker clean and then with obligatory, "This is going to hurt me more than it does you." start the wrapping of that limber switch around my bare legs...no long pants in the summer time.  Of course, it left some whelps and marks; but, in those days nobody cared 'cause you deserved it.

I asked a new cook to bring me a steel when I was on the line... He came back with a Brillo pad!!

He lasted about two weeks.

My Dad was like that. I don't think there was anything he could not do. He could build or fix anything. He taught me many skills about how to do and fix stuff, but the most important thing he taught me was that the most important things a man could have was his good name and good credit. In other words you build up a reputation in your life by your actions on what you do and how you treat others and you make your way by always covering your debts, paying back what others do for you in actions or monetarily. He is 95 now, living in the VA nursing home and doesn't really know where he is or why he is there. He doesn't know me most days but there is still a light shining from in him that all the folks there can see. They all call him "Papaw" and tell me he is their favorite.

You are a good son, Ken and obviously paid attention as you grew up. I think that's probably true of the typical member on this forum (well except those that are good daughters...  ;)

My mom was one of the "You just wait 'till your father gets home, types." Funny thing was, she usually forgot to tell him about whatever transgression my brothers, sisters or I committed. Actually, when I think about those days, I think of the Bill Withers song - Grandma's Hands...... I got my fair share of spankings, and I deserved everyone of them. But, mom made sure they came only when they were really needed. I never really knew either of my grandmas, but my mom made up for it.

Thanks for sharing that - stirred up some great memories for me.  My Dad was a jet mechanic in the Air Force.  He could truly fix ANYTHING around our house and most impressively to me built us a beautiful lake cabin at Priest Lake ID where we built many memories growing up.  My Dad always took the time to explain to me what he was fixing, how he was fixing it, and most importantly always let me help.  I learned so much from him.  I don't think I even realized how much he tought me until my Daughter  climbed up on my lap one day and brought me one of her toys that was broken (she was probably around 4 years old at the time) and said "I told Momma you could fix it because you can fix anything".  I am not half the mechanic/fixer that my Dad was but I instantly realized how important that time was that he spent with me as a child.  Time I have tried to spend 'fixing stuff' with my kids.
