Don't ask me how it happened but I am going to marry the love of my life. I am one extremely lucky guy. Don't know if it will happen here in California, we are thinking about selling everything and heading to the South. Will keep ya all posted.
Please meet Wendy...she is as purdy on the inside as she is on the outside

Congrats buddy! Very happy for you.
-
CONGRATULATIONS to both of you!!!
She IS purdy, Smoke...and she looks happy, too. They say the way to a woman's heart...well, you know.
Now about that movin' South part...I HIGHLY recommend middle GA. The economy is good here, plenty of jobs, friends nearby, etc.
There's a house for sale just up the street if that gives you any ideas.
B T W, better tell Smoochie to keep his eyes on his OWN paper!
just sayin'...
-
Go Smoke!!!
(And...You and I both know that TEXAS is where your heart is, and when you look at the economy there.....well - it is hard to argue with ;) )
-
Congratulations Brother! If you need directions to Texas, just let me know. :D
-
Go Smoke!!!
(And...You and I both know that TEXAS is where your heart is, and when you look at the economy there.....well - it is hard to argue with ;) )
Now, Tim, Texas is only half way to Georgia, the largest state EAST of the Mississippi, and home of the Fall Gathering.
Think of it Smoke...honeymoon at Clark's Hill in September. Couldn't get much better than that.
just sayin'...

Yeah...But in Texas - he will not need a translator. Georgia on the other hand uses a completely different variant of English :D :D :D :D
-
Congratulations! You better do this soon or else she will have time to think and change her mind.
Don't come to Texas. The economy is booming; the people are really nice; the people enjoy faith; the people don't like government and government spending; there are lot's of guns and personal protection is very well condoned; people are self reliant and like to work for a living; and the folks are very prejudiced about people who don't have these views.
Just saying.
Ed
-
Congratulations to both ;D
-
Congrats!
Bout time you made it official Smoke!
-
Well Jaxon, we did consider Summerville, Ga.......thinking of Dekaub county in North East Bama.......will keep you all involved.......

-
Congrats by BBQ brother! I am extremely happy for you and Wendy!
-
Congratulations! Wishing you many very happy years together. Just don't forget us here in Alien Country--can you can cook out most of the year here, and be right there with it the whole time. 70 today, warmer tomorrow. Low taxes, lots of jobs with the oil patch being so hot right now.
-
Congratulations wish you both the best.
-
Congratulations to you Smoke, you married up for sure. You must have done some GOOD cooking to snag her. Move on over to Alabama, the area you are looking at is very pretty with the mountains and not as hot in the summer. You will be close to Tommy so you will have to guard your cookers so he doesn't modify them all.
-
Congratulations to both of you! It's warm in the south. Warmth is good.
-
very cool and congratulations.

Woo-Hoo!

Wendy is from Iowa and I have never liked all this concrete and traffic and smog......we are going Country my friends....hopefully later this year..round Autumn.......

So your going to retire? ;)
Sounds like a great move Smoke!
-
Not gonna retire. I might try to find something part-time......maybe flippin burgers or something like that. We should be able to buy a house cash and have 30,000 in the bank after the dust settles...... 8)
-
Awesome news! Congrats pal!
-
Ft Payne is a nice area, pretty mountains and in the country but not far from major cities. It is less than two hours up the road from me and we try to visit up there once or twice a year.

Congrats Smoke, good luck and have fun!
-
WHOO HOO!!!! Congrats you two! Lots of exciting changes coming along for you! :)
-
Congrats!
-
Smoke, you are going to have sticker shock when you start looking at real estate prices up there, but in a very good way. Real estate up there is even much less than my part of Alabama and Alabama has about the lowest property taxes in the country. The real estate agents are going to be slobbering at the mouth when they find out you are bringing CA money into AL to buy a house and they are going to be showing you the most expensive things they can find. I have had family that moved from CA to AL and been involved with a couple of companies who moved their operations from CA to TN. Not sure what you have now but you should be easily be able to find twice what you have now for much less than half the price. Only down side is that I think Dekalb county is still a dry county but Ft Payne can sell booze in the city limits.
-
Congratulations smoke.
-
Only down side is that I think Dekalb county is still a dry county.
what does that mean "dry county"?
-
Dry County = longer drive for booze.
Does Alabama have an income tax? Gotta be better then MN and CA
-
Dry County = longer drive for booze.
you mean the town has no liquor stores? why? does that mean no bars either?
-
My only experience with a dry county was in Texas when I ate at the Salt Lick. You could bring your own hooch to drink, but they couldn't sell it.

You my friend are asking all the right questions. I've never understood any of this since moving south ???. When I lived in Milton FL back in the early 90’s it was a dry county but I could buy booze on base 8) ::). Now that I live in Pensacola I can’t buy on Sundays until after 1PM ???, which doesn’t make any since at all ::). By that time I've already gone through what was left from Saturday and really, really, am I safe to drive to get more? ??? :o ::)
-
Well, now she is maybe thinking about staying here......whatever makes her happy...will keep everybody posted..........

I thought a dry county" might do that....... :D But - like others have said...the South in general is a good place to live.

Congrats Smoke!

In California our politics suck but unlike the drinking water we do keep that alcohol flowing.
The only "dry" counties we have are due to the lack of rain ;)
-
It is nice to buy booze when ya get thirsty :P
I think she might want to stay here cause most of her family is now around here. I figure it goes this way: wherever she wants to be is where I will be :)
-
Move up here smoke. Lake, rivers and great outdoors. The two of you would love northetn California.

Life will never be the same in the most positive way - hearty congratulations to both of you ;)

Congrats to the newlyweds! ;D
-
I just want to say congrats again Smoke. She looks and sounds like a wonderful lady and way too good for you. I have been that lucky twice in my life. My first wife Cathy and I were married for 22 years before she passed away and we had two wonderful children and just a nice American dream kind of life. I met my second wife Lana a couple of years later, we were both widowed and just hit it off. We are having a sh**t load of fun in our 60's. Beer, BBQ, music and friends is sort of what we do, just remember life is too short for hot beer, cold women and bad BBQ.
-
Smoke wel will find a place for you in NOLA .
Only problem is there may be too much food, drinking, music & fun for you to stand ::)

Congratulations. Y'all are welcome here in the South...God's Country. American by Birth--Southerner by the Grace of God. Dee
-
Well, Fort Payne Bama it is. Wendy is an LVN and she has been caring for my neighbor for the last year and wants to continue until the end. We will then leave for the South when that unfortunate event happens. Will keep everyone posted when something happens.

Oh how plans can change. Wendy has asthma and the humidity here in So-Cal is bothering her a bit. The humidity in Fort Payne is at least double of what we have here.
Her sister lives in Castle Rock Colorado and has real estate connections there. We will be flying into Denver next month to check out Cimarron Hills...just outside of Colorado Springs.......will keep ya all posted..................
P.S. I have a deep down feeling Wendy wants to stay a little closer to family.........the asthma angle makes it sound more medically pressing... ;)
-
Best of luck my friend!
-
Hope all works out for the best. ;)
-
Good luck, Smoke. I am sure you will make it work out for the best. Colorado is beautiful!

Congrats Buddy .
home is where the heart is .

Hey Smoke, just saw this and I gotta say, you are one lucky son of a gun!
Speaking of guns . . . . . . . .
Here's a place to check out when you get to Colorado. (http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/07/01/waitresses-carrying-guns/11833437/)
Don't know how good the food is, but it's got to be safe environment!

Sent you a pm

Congratulations to you both. May the thin blue follow the two of you through life. And may God bless and keep you both.

Well, Wendy got herself homesick without us leaving yet so we had to rethink where to settle. It is really expensive (at least for me) to live in So-Cal. We want small town, peaceful living and crisp mountain air. I thought of Big Bear but didn't want us making that trek down the mountain everyday and then it hit me...Crestline!!! Just 20 minutes uphill at 4300 feet.....with homes we can afford. Wendy can find work off the hill and hopefully I can get a burger flipping job by Lake Gregory.
We were there yesterday for the first time:
Here is historic Old Town......we are looking for homes right around this area. More flatter lots and close to the mountain exit
(http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc469/s1cott11/0802140928a_zpsb0f8c9a1.jpg) (http://s1213.photobucket.com/user/s1cott11/media/0802140928a_zpsb0f8c9a1.jpg.html)
Found Crest Lodge which is a historic Mountain Inn of rustic cabins all built at the turn of the Century. Got a weekend booked in a couple of weeks. The caretaker there is also a reverend and he will marry us in a rustic pine tree setting at the cabins..... 8) Here is the little bear cabin we got booked:
(http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc469/s1cott11/0802141030_zpsb770579a.jpg) (http://s1213.photobucket.com/user/s1cott11/media/0802141030_zpsb770579a.jpg.html)
On Sept 6, (I gotta get more info) they have a 80 plus year tradition where they cook meat overnight in this giant pit using seasonings and meat washes. Everybody brings side dishes and I guess ya set out all night. I will find out more and will post back on this.
Got lost a bunch of times. One thing about mountain living is that there is a bunch of winding roads and Old Smoke got confused but will figure it out. We did look at one house behind Old Town. Built in 1930, with a wrap around deck, 3 story, all knotty pine throughout the house for 120,000 clams just to give you an idea at the affordability of Crestline:
The gorgeous brunette does not come with the house, she is all mine ;)

Small enough to easily fish in a kayak.
Big enough to not get to boring.
Stocked with rainbows ( ok it's like shooting fish in a barrel but they sure eat good ::)

Smoke when you visit Ft Payne in August it will be the hottest and most humid time of year, so realize it isn't always going to be that bad. We like to visit the Ft Payne, Mentone area in the hot summer because it is always a little cooler than here. The mountains of North Georgia and Eastern TN are always nice too.

We drove by Lake Gregory and it is real nice. They got a "beach" for the kids and a independent water slide that runs through part of the forest and by the lake. We hit a little traffic in downtown cause the lake was busy. We just wont go downtown during the summer months on the weekend. The locals say the lake area is real quiet during the week so the locals can hangout and have the lake to themselves.

We drove through Island Park on our last trip to visit my son in Cooke City, MT. We took a very long scenic route from Salt Lake City up through Idaho and all the way though Yellowstone Park from West Yellowstone to Cooke City.

Looks like a nice place to live Smoke!
just about 1.5 hours from the San Fernando Valley 8) you don't even feel you are in Cali when you are there. It was 73 yesterday with no humidity. We drove 15 minutes to go down the mountain and the temp was 94 and sticky at the base of the mountain.
-
As much as we'd like to have you in the southeast being within driving distance of family is big!
-
And your close to Fontana so you can catch a couple races every year ;)
-
I am sure wherever you settle down, it will become home soon enough.

Well we sealed the deal on Saturday over at Crest Lodge. Had a private ceremony in the the pines and a dry aged rib-eye with Texas Toast for supper.

How ya doing ya old buzzard. Wendy and I settled down in Crestline California.

Hanging in pretty good for a geezer. Had wing problems recently, (rotor cuff) but I've been to that rodeo before, so no surprises. Not doing much comping this season, last one was Labor Day in Myrtle Beach with Billy Merrill's Holy Smoke BBQ team. Finished in the middle of 48 Quers. The KCBS circuit is getting very competitive. 550 teams at the Open in KC a few weeks ago.
Hope you and your bride will make it this way, one day. The low country steamed oysters await you and of course, OD's shrimp and grits! ;D

We finally got settled in at our new house in Cedarpines Park. It amazes me that we are only an hours and a half drive from the crap-hole we used to live in. We really did not want such a big house but it was 40,000 cheaper than smaller houses we were looking at . In 2007, it sold for over 400,000 before the real estate crash. Crestline got hit really hard and we got it for 140,000. Wendy fell in love with the place and I wanted her to have her dream home. Now we just gotta find some jobs ???

Yes Sir Pappy, I got all my charcoal in the shed. Under our rear deck is a aluminum shed that I have half a cord of firewood in. Our neighbor two doors down supplies firewood to all of us. He has pine and oak. He told me if I ever need oak splits for my BBQ to just let him know. I was thinking of an off-set, but it will too chilly most of the time to set by a pit so I figure the PBC will do most of the heavy lifting. ;)

So you been in the new house 20 minutes and you already got a wood guy. Smoke for President!
